A Crown Upon the Deep
Ilyra Venn
A diver from drowned Mareth who has spent fourteen years searching its ruins for evidence that the kingdom did not simply vanish. Ilyra can sense memory moving through places and objects, but she treats what she feels as something to test rather than automatic truth. Her search puts her directly against the political system that profited from what Mareth lost.
Corven Ardan
The ruler of Avarre when Ilyra’s evidence reaches the crown. Corven inherits authority tied to memory, the annual Tithe, and the leviathan beneath his kingdom. He is intelligent, controlled, and dangerous precisely because the machinery around him was built to make command feel normal. Meeting Ilyra forces private knowledge and public power into the same room.
Tessa
A medical authority in Ilyra’s work whose job is not to make dangerous memory contact heroic. Tessa can stop a route when a participant is no longer capable of meaningful consent, making bodily limits part of the mission rather than an inconvenience to it. She is one of the people who keeps survival from becoming an excuse for using someone.
